Bird Rock Coffee Roasters in La Jolla, California is hosting a challenge that will help customers permanently change how they look at coffee brewing and it will time up with Coffee Fest, San Diego on June 3, 2011. This challenge will help not only the commoner know the differences, but will hone the skills of all baristas participating. The challenge takes place at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, 5627 La Jolla Boulevard, La Jolla, Ca 92037 on Friday, June 3rd at 5:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Eight Southern California roasters and 16 Southern California baristas will participate, and each roaster will contribute one coffee. Baristas will be randomly paired to form teams of two to collaborate and find the best extraction for their particular coffee and brew method and then present their brewed cup to the judges.

Once the beans are revealed to the baristas, they will then be given a randomly chosen brew method: Chemex, Clever Coffee Dripper, and the AeroPress. The Baristas, then, must collaborate to come up with grind size, coffee and water ratio and pour-over technique to produce one 10-12 oz serving of brewed coffee.

Judges, then, would analyze the brewed product and provide feedback not only on the coffee but also on the method used by the team members.
