Description

Burundi Specialty Seeds (BSS) is led by an ambitious and determined trio of close friends, Picasso Nduwayo, Zephyrin Banzubaze, and Jeremiah Nakimuhana. The three of them have been building a coffee production and exporting business model over the last 3 years in Burundi, and have developed an innovative supply chain that is unique amongst traditional routes in Burundi. Few coffee washing station owners in Burundi are also farming coffee at a large scale, but BSS have developed a land lease model to plant 38,000+ coffee trees and establish an exceptional model to produce specialty coffee. In tandem with their own production that will mature over the coming years, they are also purchasing coffee cherries from surrounding smallholders who no longer have washing stations in their communities.

All of BSS’s lots are processed at their production site called UMOCO (meaning “light” in Burundi’s native language, Kirundi) in Kayanza. The lots are processed as sun dried naturals, with a 3-5 day “yeast development” period. Additionally, community and day lot separation occurs for pre-milling quality control. These processes have increased sweetness and clarity of flavor in their coffees over the years. BSS has begun developing plans to build a washing station to produce fully washed coffees in the near future. Additionally, they’ve begun laying the groundwork to develop programs that support farmers with compost production, seedling distribution, and quality control feedback loops.

This lot features fruity flavors of strawberry, grape, and pink grapefruit that deepen with a jammy sweetness as the cup cools. A grape and citrus like acidity carries into an aftertaste that reminds us of Swiss chocolate.
